Charlie Parr – 7:30 pm Saturday March 12, 2016

CharlieParr0316Charlie Parr’s heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don’t strive for authenticity: They are authentic. Crossings brings Parr to the State Theatre on Sat., March 12, at 7:30 p.m.

It’s the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up without a TV but
with his dad’s recordings of America’s musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton
and Lightnin’ Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. With his long scraggly hair, “Father Time” beard, thrift-store workingman’s flannel and jeans, and emphatic, throaty voice, Parr looks and sounds the part entirely.

Parr released a new studio album, “Stumpjumper,” in Spring 2015. Long a part of the vibrant Duluth music scene (Low, Trampled by Turtles), Parr traveled to North Carolina to record this album with fellow musician Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden Messenger). This is the first album Parr recorded outside of Minnesota, and the first to feature a full band.

Percussive and raw, the 11 songs on “Stumpjumper,” (10 originals and his version of the venerable murder ballad, “Delia”) could be lost field recordings from another era. His blistering picking — he switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo — and keening, cut-through-the-crowd vocals resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true.

Parr plays an 1890 banjo, a 12-string guitar and a resonator. Most of his recordings, including “Roustabout” (2008), “Jubilee” (2007), “Rooster” (2005), “King Earl” (2004), “1922” (2002) and “Criminals and Sinners” (2001) eschew typical studio settings. He has recorded in warehouses, garages, basements and storefronts, usually on vintage equipment, which gives his work the historic feel of field recordings.

A beloved regional artist, with a fan base spanning as far as Ireland and Australia, Parr, who grew up in Austin, draws inspiration from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of Minnesota.

BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet — 7:30 pm Saturday March 5th, 2016

BeauSoleilFor over 40 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet have blended the rich Cajun traditions of Louisiana with elements of zydeco, New Orleans Jazz, country and blues to become the most esteemed Cajun group in music. Crossings brings the Grammy award-winning Cajun band to the State Theatre.

Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet. BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans to Carnegie Hall, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England.

The band performs with a resounding authenticity all the while bringing a refreshed playfulness to the genre – the fiddle, flatpicked guitar and accordion carry driving melodies over the two-step and waltz dance beats characteristic of their Cajun and Zydeco music, but not without the country, jazz and blues leanings that informed the genre in the 1920s.

A 12-time Grammy award nominee, and two time Grammy award winner (1998 & 2010), BeauSoleil were the first Cajun Band ever to win a Grammy. They have released 25 albums. Recognizing Michael Doucet for his involvement with the Cajun world, The National Endowment for the arts awarded him with National Heritage fellowship in 2005 as well s the united states artist fellowship in 2007.

A frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s NPR show “A Prairie Home Companion,” BeauSoleil have also made appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Austin City Limits,” the Super Bowl XXXI pre-game show, and HBO’s New Orleans based hit show “Treme.”

“The best Cajun Band in the world”

Blimp: Tribute to Led Zeppelin — 7:30 pm Saturday February 27th, 2016

BlimpNo costumes. No ridiculous nonsense. Just the music, as Zeppelin would have played it on a stage. It swings. It cries. It feels the blues. Blimp performs its tribute to Led Zeppelin at the State Theatre.

Blimp includes Collective Unconscious members and collaborators popular for several shows at the State Theatre, including tributes to The Beatles, the Band, Eagles, Beach Boys, and Janis Joplin.

The tribute band represents Zeppelin in all of its facets: The band that invented stadium rock, yet created some of the most beautiful acoustic music ever recorded. Led Zeppelin’s influences on rock history are on par with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Allman Brothers.

Blimp plays the hits, including “Rock ’n Roll,” “Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid,” “All of My Love,” and of course, “Stairway to Heaven.”

Audiences can experience the raw, live power of this quintessential band with Blimp. Stacy Bauer’s uncompromising performance as lead singer Robert Plant is an experience in itself, and Mark Hasbrouck’s guitar playing will drop the jaws of aspiring guitar players everywhere. The driving power of Duffy and Jeff Engholm’s rhythm section provide the rock solid rails this rock ’n roll train needs to roll.

Blimp is the music of Zeppelin. Nothing more. Nothing less.
