Rumours & Dreams Fleetwood Mac Tribute — June 13, 2015

fleetwood_webCrossings brings Pamela McNeill's "Rumours & Dreams: The Music of Fleetwood Mac" to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, June 13, at 8 PM. Tickets are $28 in advance, $30 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 7 PM.

Singer/songwriter Pamela McNeill has assembled an all-star band to bring the music of Fleetwood Mac to life. Joining her will be Minnesota Music Hall of Famer Mary Jane Alm along with Jeff Engholm, heard by State Theatre audiences at Collective Unconscious concerts. Also in the band are Tom Bard, Jay Graf, and Dugan McNeill.

Concert-goers will revel in the group’s hits, including, “The Chain,” “Landslide,” “Rhiannon,” and “Don’t Stop (Thinking about Tomorrow).” Some deeper cuts will gratify the most dedicated fans of this British-American rock band. McNeill’s distinctive “voice of a fiery angel” lends itself to the music, while the impeccable musicianship of the band and Engholm’s vocals top it off like whipped cream on a sundae.

Fleetwood Mac formed in 1967 in London. Their second album after the incorporation of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, 1977's “Rumours,” produced four U.S. Top 10 singles (including Nicks’ song “Dreams,” which was the band's first and only U.S. number one). The album remained at No.1 on the American albums chart for 31 weeks. To date the album has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-selling album of all time.

The State Theatre is located at 96 East 4th Street in Zumbrota. For more information call 507-732-5210.

The Ultimate Johnny Cash — May 22

Terry-Lee-GoffeeCrossings brings Terry Lee Goffee to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Friday, May 22, at 8 pm for the Ultimate Tribute to Johnny Cash. Tickets are $24 in advance, $28 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 7 pm.

He looks like Cash. He sounds like Cash. He moves like Cash: Nobody does Johnny Cash like Terry Lee Goffee.

Terry Lee Goffee has been a Johnny Cash fan since he was 8 years old. His long-running admiration for the music and the man is apparent in his performance. Goffee does more than play the music or “impersonate” Cash — like an actor in a play, he becomes his character from the moment he walks on stage until the end of the show. He plays the music so well audiences and reviewers rave. He plays the man so well, he was chosen to provide the moves for a Cash character on the Guitar Hero 5 video game.

Audiences will revel in 34 Cash songs, including classics such as “A Boy Named Sue,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” “I Walk The Line,” “Ring Of Fire, “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Hurt.”

Cash – The Man in Black – is widely considered one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. His music is primarily thought of as country, but his deep bass-baritone voice lent itself equally well to the genres of rock and roll, blues, folk, rockabilly and gospel.

He traditionally began his concerts with the simple “Hello, I'm Johnny Cash” – a signature greeting supplied by Goffee for the Guitar Hero Cash character.

Goffee says his tribute, “Sprang from my appreciation and love, not only for the music of Johnny Cash, but for the man himself. A champion of the underdog, a voice for those who often have none, an ‘outlaw’ before it became fashionable. If you come away from this presentation with a better understanding of who Johnny Cash is, I will have succeeded in my vision for this endeavor.”

Goffee’s tribute show has taken him all across the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The Bobby Vee Story by Justin Ploof — May 16

ploofBobbyVee_webCrossings brings Justin Ploof to Zumbrota's State Theatre for his one man show "Come Back When You Grow Up Girl: The Bobby Vee Story" on Saturday, May 16, at 8 pm. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 7 pm.

One of the longest lasting teen idols of the 1960s is brought to life in this one man show that takes you up the charts, through America and behind the music of Bobby Vee. Ploof, who at one time toured with Vee, offers electrifying performances of the golden greats that took Vee to the heights of Pop stardom: “Take Good Care of My Baby,” “Run to Him,” “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes,” “Come Back When You Grow Up Girl,” “Rubber Ball,” “Devil or Angel,” “Charms,” and many more.

Ploof’s show also tells the stories behind the music, transporting audiences back in time with archival footage.

Vee’s impressive resume would include 38 Billboard Hot 100 singles, six gold single records, 14 Top 40 hits and two gold albums. His song, “Take Good Care of My Baby,” released in 1961, went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart. He has been inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

Ploof, who has performed several rockumentary shows in Zumbrota with his band the Throwbacks (Beatles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Monkees, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) said he will mix in some deeper cuts with the hits.

The State Theatre is located at 96 East 4th Street in Zumbrota. For more information call 507-732-5210.

A Story Once Told — May 15

A Story Once Told_680x400A Story Once Told

A postmodern fairytale for premodern people. Fantastical plays based on the paintings of James C. Christensen.

Friday, May 15 at 7 PM at the State Theatre
Presented by
The Minnesota SkyVault Theatre Company

Tickets:  $10 adults  /  $5 students  Doors open at 6:15 PM

A Story Once Told is a collection of original short plays retelling pieces of an old Briar Rose story. The 13 short plays are part of a larger series of plays inspired by the fantastical paintings of James C. Christensen, and will be performed by members of The Minnesota SkyVault Theatre Company.

The setting is a proverbial far-off kingdom, and the comical overarching story is the betrothal, marriage and escape of a beautiful princess. The stories are teeming with floating fish, foolish owls, advice-giving rabbits and unicorns backwards speaking . Mr. Christensen has granted permission to incorporate his paintings into the performance, as background and set pieces. The short plays are penned by Chatfield author and playwright Columcille Driscoll, who was awarded a grant for their production.

The original production premiered in Rochester in March, and will travel to the Phoenix Theatre in Minneapolis in July.

Peter Mayer — May 9

petermayerwebCrossings brings Peter Mayer to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

With breath-taking guitar work and intelligent lyrics to match, Peter Mayer delivers richly layered songs about interconnectedness and the human journey.

Mayer recently released his 10th album, “Third Street.” His songs have been compared to Shaker furniture – clean and light, yet hardly simple. His guitar skills make playing his music seem deceptively easy.

“Peter Mayer is a magician…(his) universe is full of metaphor and meaning, story and symbol — everything contains more than meets the eye.”
–Bill Reed, music editor, Colorado Springs Gazette

Overall, Mayer’s songs explore the beauty and mystery of the world. But there’s plenty of humor, too, in songs like, “Dr. Seuss,” and “Hot Pickles,” off his new album.

Mayer, who once studied at seminary before pursuing a career in music, has toured full-time since 1995. Since then he has gathered a dedicated following, selling out shows from Minnesota to Texas, New England to Colorado. Mayer is an artist of relevance and insight whose music is not to be missed.
