Whitesidewalls Rock ‘n’ Roll Revue – January 25

Crossings brings the Whitesidewalls, a fixture in the Twin Cities music scene for 40 years, to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Friday, January 25 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased by calling (507) 732-7616. Doors open at 6:30.

The Whitesidewalls Rock n Roll Revue is a celebration of doo-wop, rockabilly rock and roll music that will have audiences dancing in their seats. The band first formed in 1971 and played for many years — they played a series of full summer shows at Valleyfair amusement park in Shakopee for 10 years, and in 1985 were named the Minnesota Ballroom Operator's Association's Act of the Year. Then they disbanded for 20 years. One of the early members, Dave "Swannee" Swanson, brought the group back together in 2007. Founder of the group, Pat Brown ("Hound Dog"), continues to play guitar, drums, and bass as well as sing, and is the band's musical director.

Swanson sings and plays guitar, sax, and keyboards. Other members of the band are Rocky Beaumont on drums, bass, guitar and vocals, Gino Gambucci on bass, keyboards, guitar and vocals, and Bobby Maestro on keyboards, bass, and vocals.

The band was inducted into the Mid-American Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

Sing Along with Mary Poppins – January 18

The magic of Mary Poppins is as timely as ever! Come sing along with us at a special showing on Friday, January 18, at 7 pm. $5 admission.

Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke delight us as they sing and dance through this Disney classic. Where else can you have a tea party on the ceiling? A fox hunt on merry-go-round horses? Or dance across the rooftops of London? And how can you resist singing along to Chim Chim Cher-ee, A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, and Let's Go Fly a Kite…..

Mary Poppins was Super Nanny before anyone thought of reality TV. Her lessons teach the wealthy and unhappy Banks family about what's really important.  We can all use a dose of that!

Thank you!

We would like to take this time to say "Thank You" and extend our wishes for a blessed holiday season to you and your loved ones.

2012 has been a very exciting year for us. After raising approximately $350,000 in gifts and pledges we were able to purchase the State Theatre, replace the roof and hire a Director.

We assumed theatre operations in April and have been thrilled with your response. In the past eight months we've hosted 21 concerts, 3 plays, 4 speakers and 5 movies. The State Theatre has come alive again with nearly 5,000 people passing through our doors to be entertained and uplifted.

You are the reason for our success. Your support and enthusiasm, ideas and energy create our space. We look forward to continued success in 2013 with more concerts, films, plays and other events.

When making your tax deductible charitable donations this year, please consider the Zumbrota Area Arts Council, a 501(c)(3) organization. Your gifts have taken us more than halfway to our Phase I goal of $650,000. With your help, we can complete the journey. To donate, click here.

Hometown Holiday Show — December 15

Pianist/accordionist Dan Chouinard and singer Prudence Johnson will headline the Hometown Holiday Show at Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, December 15, at 7:30 pm. This community-wide variety show and sing-along will feature performances by the Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School Jazz Band, members of the Rochester Male Chorus, Heroes Choir, Zumbrota Dance Studio students, The Plaids, and other local musicians. Attendees will be greeted by carolers and may be surprised by a visit from Santa Claus.

This concert is a joint production between Crossings and the Zumbrota Area Arts Council to raise funds for improvements to the historic State Theatre. The theatre is an intimate venue whose vintage atmosphere is praised by audiences and performers alike. Planned renovations include weatherizing the exterior, restoration of interior finishes, upgrades in sound and lighting equipment, seating improvements, and an eventual addition to the building for handicapped accessible restrooms, a larger lobby and dressing rooms.

Chouinard turns up regularly in Zumbrota playing a supporting role for performers like Johnson, Peter Ostroushko, Ann Reed and others. Both he and Johnson are regular contributors to Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion radio show and had a part in the making of the film A Prairie Home Companion by Robert Altman. Johnson is a seasoned jazz and folk vocalist and inductee into the MN Rock and Country Hall of Fame. She also appeared in Robert Redford’s film, A River Runs Through It. Johnson will join Chouinard in performing traditional holiday music as well as some Swedish/Scandinavian, French, and Italian songs.

Chouinard has hosted similar community-based holiday shows in Lanesboro every year since 2007, drawing on local talent to fill most of the show's roster of musicians and storytellers and always featuring a performer friend from the Twin Cities as a special guest. He regularly creates special programs which blend storytelling, interview and music, many of these for Minnesota Public Radio. He recently dubbed Crossings “my favorite SE Minnesota haunt.”

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Student tickets for ages 18 and under are $5. To reserve tickets, call 507-732-7616 or stop in to Crossings at 320 East Avenue in Zumbrota. For more information, visit www.crossingsatcarnegie.com

Born on the Bayou — November 17

A tribute to one of the biggest bands in rock ’n roll history comes to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, November 17, at 7:30 pm, when Justin Ploof and the Throwbacks perform their Rockumentary Born on the Bayou: A Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 the day of the show and can be purchased by calling Crossings at (507) 732-7616.

Not only will audiences hear hits like “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising,” and “Down on the Corner,” they will also be treated to a complete “blast from the past” show experience. Behind the music is a story, the makings for a rockumentary! Justin Ploof and The Throwbacks are the original authors of the rockumentary, which includes vintage footage and brief narration. The show starts with CCR’s formation and rise to fame, peaking in 1969-70, the troubles between brothers John and Tom Fogerty, and the decline and eventual demise of the band.

Slides of the band and historic footage of the Vietnam police action during anti-war songs add context to the music. The presentation also includes some little-known facts about the band.

The Throwbacks include Ploof, brother Jason Ploof and father Dan Ploof. They have performed other Rockumentaries, including “Dylan: Under the Covers,” and “Running Down a Dream: The Tom Petty Story.” They have shared the stage with the likes of Soul Asylum, Bobby Vee, Joan Jett, and Jessie Lang. Their incredible attention to detail and quality of musicianship will wow you from the first chord right on through to the rousing end. Guest musicians will help the Ploofs hit all the authentic notes so every song will leave audiences thinking they’ve traveled back to the ’60s.

CCR consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty, his brother and rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. While the band members originated from the San Francisco Bay Area, they played music that traveled from country rock to swamp rock, emphasizing Southern themes and styles.

The band has sold 26 million albums in the United States alone, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. On Rolling Stone's 100 greatest artists of all time, they are listed as number 82.
