“IGNITION!”
A story-telling dance journey that is both uplifting and thought provoking.

This 60 minute performance told through text and dance is choreographed by award-winning dance veteran Denise Armstead and gives witness to how we humans ignite each other to overcome our difficulties.

Moving in rhythm to the locally recorded music of Native American Etsi Shoen and the eclectic musician, Beck, the common threads of body language, communication and emotion are illustrated through movement and storytelling, weaving together a very human story of the ways we interact with each other, using a unique mix of diverse and demanding dance styles.

In the words of Dance critic Gretchen Mensink Lovejoy: “Strollers, cellphones, PEZ and stories…are all part of a very generous IGNITION.”

Workshops held by DA Dance at the Women-of-Nations domestic violence shelter in St. Paul inspired this production. Helping these women find a way to express their frustration and pain, the dancers began to work on a piece that dealt with themes of entrapment, either physical or psychological. The struggle to ignite themselves and others to break free and release their energy gave them hope for the future.

IGNITION is a highly suitable piece to introduce modern dance to new audiences because of its whacky humor and joyful approach to life. The story of human interactions and experiences, and the difficulties of making honest connections, reveals layers of life’s circumstances, transforms old behaviors and attitudes into a shift of consciousness. It will make you feel more alive!

Choreographed and conceived by Artistic Director Denise Armstead in collaboration with dancers Brian Evans, Gerry Girouard, and Heidi Kalweit.

The State Theatre is located at 96 East 4th Street in Zumbrota, MN. 507-732-5210

Monroe Crossing — June 27, 2015

monroecrossing_webCrossings brings Monroe Crossing to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, June 27, at 8 PM. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 7 PM.

Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Audiences will delight in their airtight harmonies, razor sharp arrangements and on-stage rapport.

The Minnesota-based band plays an average of 125 shows a year at major venues and festivals, including an appearance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The band, named in honor of Bill Monroe, “the Father of Bluegrass,” sounds fresh as a new day but true to the authentic bluegrass of Monroe’s day.

Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds and tastes, combining for a unique ensemble sound. They are Derek Johnson: guitar, lead & harmony vocals; Lisa Fuglie: fiddle, mandolin, lead and harmony vocals; Matt Thompson: mandolin, fiddle, baritone vocals; Mark Anderson: bass and bass vocals; and David Robinson: banjo. Their paths crossed through the music of Bill Monroe so they like to say they had a “Monroe Crossing.”

Among many honors, Monroe Crossing showcased at the International Bluegrass Music Association Convention and was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. The only bluegrass band ever nominated as “Artist of the Year” by the Minnesota Music Academy (MMA), Monroe Crossing has won an MMA “Bluegrass Album of the Year” award.

The expressiveness of the vocals and the arrangement are terrific, not to mention the flawless instrumental work!” — Joe Steiner, Bluegrass DJ, WLFC, Findlay, Ohio
