Takin’ It to the Limit — March 13

EaglesTribute_2014_webCrossings brings The Fabulous Armadillos and Collective Unconscious to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Friday, March 13, at 7:30 pm for "Takin' It To The Limit: A Tribute to the Eagles." Tickets are $34 in advance, $38 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm. SOLD OUT

Two groups of incredibly talented musicians come together to perform music by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, The Eagles.

Both bands regularly perform sold-out shows at the 270-seat theatre, whether paying tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, or to Motown. Audience members walk out of these concerts asking when the bands are scheduled to return. Two previous performances of the Eagles tribute show here were no exception.

Crossings audiences have flocked to Collective Unconscious’s covers of CSNY’s “Déjà Vu” album, the Beatles' “Abbey Road,” The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds,” and Simon and Garfunkel's “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” CU consistently delivers a pitch-perfect rendition of every song they perform.

The Fabulous Armadillos also have performed tributes to Motown and the Doobie Brothers at the State, and will be back in May for “Stadium Rock: Bands that Believe More is Better.” Since 2006 they have established a large and loyal following in the state with their spot-on re-creations of songs from many genres of music. Listeners close their eyes and are listening to all those vinyl records again.

The audience can expect no less than an evening of amazing music that will leave them wondering whether The Eagles themselves had taken the stage.

Abbey Road — February 21

abbeyroad_webCrossings brings Collective Unconscious back to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, February 21 for the Beatles' Abbey Road at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $28 in advance, $32 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Immensely popular Collective Unconscious returns for a repeat performance of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album which will be performed in its entirety on period instruments.

Well-known for their recreations of the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds,” Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Déjà vu,” and collaboration with the Fabulous Armadillos for an Eagles tribute, this group of talented, witty musicians will bring the Beatles to the audience with a note-for-note, nuance-for-nuance version of one of their most influential albums.

Released in 1969, “Abbey Road” was the last studio effort from the Beatles, and is listed on multiple “best album” lists. Collective Unconscious’ founding member Jeff Engholm says it stands out triumphantly from other classic albums because of “the vibes that shoot out from it: mellow, never rushed, carefully crafted, playful, soulful, beautiful.” Never failing to recognize the joy inherent in each cut, Collective Unconscious executes each of the seventeen tracks – including such classic songs as “Come Together,” “Octopus' Garden” and “Here Comes the Sun” – with precision, reverence and exuberance. The band has such fun performing that it’s impossible for the crowd not to join in, and it is no surprise these concerts are regularly sold out.

Band on the Run: A Tribute to Wings — November 22

wings-logoCrossings brings Collective Unconscious and Stacy Bauer to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, November 22, at 7:30 pm for "Band on the Run: A Tribute to Wings." Tickets are $32 in advance, $35 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Collective Unconscious, known for its top-notch tribute concerts, returns to the State Theatre with Stacy Bauer and friends from the Fabulous Armadillos and more to present this tribute to Paul McCartney's band.

After The Beatles, Paul McCartney returned to superstardom in the 1970s with Wings. Wings’ third album, “Band on the Run,” was its most successful and remains the most celebrated of McCartney's post-Beatles albums. It was 1974's top-selling studio album in the United Kingdom and Australia, and revitalized McCartney's critical standing.

Collective Unconscious is well-known to local audiences for their album shows, reproducing the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds,” and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Déjà Vu,” albums, and playing the hits of the Eagles with the Fabulous Armadillos. They are joined again with Stacy Bauer, who sang as Janis Joplin for a tribute show to that star.

CU never fails to sell out its Zumbrota shows, just as it packs houses throughout the state.

A mutual love of the music of Paul McCartney and Wings is what brought this show together. Members of Collective Unconscious, Blimp, Kentucky Thunder and others all came together to perform most of the music that was recorded for the 1976 album Wings Over America, plus a few extras.

There’s a smattering of Beatles songs in the mix, among them “The Long And Winding Road,” “Lady Madonna,” and “I've Just Seen a Face.” But mostly, listeners will hear the songs that let Wings rule the airwaves back in the mid-70s, such as “Listen to What The Man Said,” “My Love,” “Silly Love Songs,” and, of course, “Band On The Run.”

For this show, CU has assembled a tremendous group lead by Jeff Engholm, fresh off his amazing performances in both Floydian Slip’s Tribute to Pink Floyd, and The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” shows. Joining Engholm are many local and regional favorites including:

Muggsy Lauer  – Guitar/Vocals (Collective Unconscious, Eagles Tribute, Briefcase Full of Blues Brothers)
Stacy Bauer – Vocals/Percussion (Blimp, Pachanga Society, Janis Joplin Tributes)
Duff Eisenschenk – Drums (BLIMP)
Tom Bard – Vocals/Keyboards (The Bill & Tom Show, Floydian Slip)
Kurt Rodman – Guitar (Guitars, Guitars, Guitars)
Ken Vork, Mike Anderson – horns

Doobie Brothers Tribute — March 29

DoobieBrothersTribute-500

Crossings brings The Fabulous Armadillos & Collective Unconscious to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, March 29, at 7:30 pm for "Takin' It to the Streets: A Doobie Brothers Tribute". Tickets are $34 in advance, $38 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Early ticket purchases for this show are strongly recommended.

The Fabulous Armadillos and Collective Unconscious, the same group that sold out both performances of their much talked about Eagles tribute, are uniting once again to bring you the unique vocals, soul and power of the Doobie Brothers in “Takin It To The Streets: A Doobie Brothers Tribute.”

The audience will hear hits like “Black Water,” “Minute By Minute,” “What A Fool Believes,” “Takin It To The Streets,” and many more. The Doobie Brothers continue to make music, releasing “World Gone Crazy,” in 2010.

The band started playing around northern California in 1970, and quickly became a favorite of local Hells Angels chapters. Over the next five years, they often performed at a favorite biker venue, the Chateau Liberté in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Their second album, “Toulouse Street,” included hits, “Listen to the Music,” and “Jesus Is Just Alright,” and brought the band their breakthrough success after its release in July 1972.

Crossings concert-goers know “The Dillos” and Collective Unconscious from their collaborative tribute to The Eagles, as well as concerts each band has performed on their own. The Fabulous Armadillos put on a wildly successful Motown show, while CU has brought “album concerts” featuring the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Beatles.

Seeing these bands in the vintage 270-seat State Theatre, surrounded by enthusiastic fans, is an experience music-lovers won’t soon forget. Concert-goers should plan on getting up out of their seats to dance through the concert, and for the ovations at the end of the show!

Pet Sounds — November 23

Collective-Unconscious-Pet-

Crossings brings Collective Unconscious back to Zumbrota's State Theatre on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 pm for a repeat performance of their wildly popular tribute to the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" album. Tickets are $32 in advance, $35 at the door, and can be purchased online or by calling 507-732-7616. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

The Central-Minnesota band delivers an album concert, faithfully reproducing each "Pet Sounds" song. To create that authentic experience, Collective Unconscious will bring along an 18-piece orchestra, plus guest performers. There’s even a Theremin involved – a Russian-invented electronic musical instrument played without physical contact. It’s used on “Good Vibrations.”

While the Beach Boys started out as a lighthearted surfer rock band, their 1966 album, largely composed by Brian Wilson, was groundbreaking at the time and now is considered a classic. “Pet Sounds” includes songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows” and “Sloop John B,” and features a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound. Unconventional instruments, experimentation, and layers of vocal harmonies permeate the music. The album represented a move to a psychedelic sound for the band, and marked the emergence of psychedelic rock as a musical style.

The Beach Boys have had more than 80 songs chart worldwide; 36 of them were Top 40 hits in the United States, and four of those reached number one on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Collective Unconscious is a group of musicians who have a history of making incredible music together, whether it's their own originals or cover songs. Over the past decade, they have stunned audiences throughout Minnesota with their productions of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young’s “Déjà vu,” and Simon & Garfunkel’s "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Fronted by singer-songwriters Jeff Engholm, Nathan Nesje, and Muggsy Lauer, the band will be joined by jazz pianist George Maurer, vocal quartet The Half Steps, and The Vees.

Collective Unconscious Presents “The Last Waltz” — April 6

The band that set the bar in magnificent album shows brings to life one of the greatest rock concerts of all time, The Last Waltz. Collective Unconscious is renowned for staging such mega-hits as The Beatles' Abbey Road, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, CSNY’s Déjà vu, and most recently as half of the super group that performed Takin’ It To The Limit, a Tribute to The Eagles. For The Last Waltz, the stage will once again be filled with special guests as they bring to life one of the greatest evenings of music ever performed.

Collective Unconscious will be joined by special guests Stacy Bauer, Leon Laudenbach, Mark Hazzy Hasbrouck, Grant Haake, Jeff Lee, and Dan Barth. Collective Unconscious is Nathan Nature Nesje, Jeff Engholm, Muggsy Lauer, George Maurer, and Andy Deckard.

The program includes the hits "Up on Cripple Creek," "The Shape I'm In," "Who Do You Love," and "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down." Before it was a three-disc album, The Last Waltz was a 1976 farewell concert by The Band, filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name. The concert itself was on Thanksgiving in San Francisco, and The Band was joined on stage by more than a dozen special guests, including Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young.

The Band, which continued to tour in the '80s without guitarist Robbie Robertson, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004 Rolling Stone ranked them No. 50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2008 The Band received the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The State Theatre is located at 96 East 4th Street in Zumbrota.
