William Kent Krueger is coming!

The State Theatre is proud to announce the appearance of this beloved local author at 7 pm on Thursday, October 25.

William Kent Krueger, a multi award-winning author and crime writer, lives in St. Paul. He is best known for his Cork O'Connor series set primarily in Minnesota. He is the recipient of  back to back Anthony awards for best novel and is a four time Minnesota Book Award winner. 

Krueger will take the stage to discuss all his books, including his most recent work, Trickster's Point, which debuted at #12 on the New York Times bestseller list.

This program is free and open to the public.

Takin’ It To The Limit

Audiences have flocked to Collective Unconscious’ covers of CSNY’s “Déjà Vu” album, the Beatles' “Abbey Road,” The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds” and Simon and Garfunkel's “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” CU consistently delivers a pitch-perfect rendition of every song they perform.

The Fabulous Armadillos began their music series in 2006 at Pioneer Place in St. Cloud with such classic shows as Southern Rock, The British Invasion, From The Grave, Guitar Heroes, Outlaw Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and the now-infamous One Hit Wonders show. All 12 shows were sold out.

Expect no less than an evening of amazing music that will leave you wondering whether The Eagles themselves had taken the stage.

It’s All One Water

We swim in it, boat on it, bathe in it. We cry it, consume it and are comprised of it. In winter, we even walk on it. Water is both elemental and functional; we harness the humbling power of its waterfalls and rivers to power our lives, yet in one single weather event it can destroy all we have built. Crossings asked photographers and writers to share what water means to them for this exhibit.

"It's All One Water" is a collection of 28 photographs and 28 written pieces (both prose and poetry) on display through the month of October at Crossings. Join us for a reception on Friday, October 19, at 7 pm at Crossings to view the photographs and enjoy refreshments. Then move with us next door to the State Theatre for the readings and a slideshow of the photographs.

Participants were invited to explore whatever aspects of water fascinate them and create their own artistic expression of this most basic foundation for life. Photographers and writers from around the region share their work in this intriguing exhibit produced in collaboration with the Zumbro Watershed Partnership.

Heart Like A Wheel

The Pines Are On Their Way

Rising out of the prairies of the Midwest, The Pines are one of the most distinct and powerful indie-rock/Americana groups to hit the national scene in years. Crossings brings The Pines to Zumbrota’s State Theatre on Sat., Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

With roots in the folk and blues of the heartland, The Pines craft that music into something new, a sound that wavers on the edge of traditional acoustic music, but embraces the nuances of today’s indie-rock and blues music.

The Pines, with frontmen David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey released their third Red House Records album in January: “Dark So Gold.” The son of Greg Brown’s producer and sideman Bo Ramsey, Benson was reared on folk and blues music and continues to let those influences shine, even on louder electric songs. David also had a deep love for traditional music, and together the two of them started crafting songs that evoke the ancient, while incorporating newer rock and pop sounds.

Committing to a musical career together, Benson and David returned to their Midwestern roots and moved to Minneapolis, where they slowly grew their band to include banjo player Michael Rossetto (Spaghetti Western String Co.), drummer J.T. Bates (Michel Portal, John Gorka), bassist James Buckley (Ed Harcourt, Daniel Johnston, Dosh), guitarist Jacob Hanson (Halloween, Alaska) and Benson’s brother Alex Ramsey on keyboards.

Showcasing their distinct blend of dark atmospheric indie-folk, rock and blues, The Pines’ new album shows a young band that has fully arrived with a sound and song craft that stands apart on the indie music landscape. The Pines cook up a diverse palette of musical flavors and songs that reflect on cold days, dark nights and the hope that shines in between.

Under the Influence with Jane Sassaman

Award winning quilter Jane Sassaman is coming to town! Don't miss her lecture on Thursday, September 20 at 7 pm at the State Theatre.

"Under the Influence" is a lecture of the visual and philosophical ideas that have influenced Jane and her work. Be prepared to view an extraordinary range of wonderful images. Jane A. Sassaman is a contemporary quilt artist, fabric designer, author and teacher whose critically acclaimed work inspires creative confidence in aspiring artists of all backgrounds. Her internationally known quilts are known for their bold designs, celebrating the energy and miraculous beauty of garden flowers and plants (and the occasional skeleton!).

Jane's quilts are shown worldwide and can be found in many private and corporate art collections. Her quilt Willow was named one of the best 100 American Quilts of the Century. She was awarded the Quilts Japan Award for her work in Quilt National 1999. She also received "The Fairfield Master Award for Contemporary Artistry" at the International Quilt Festival in 1996.

Jane is also an accomplished teacher of design and quilting for guilds and conferences around the world. She travels internationally, teaching groups and individuals how to nurture creativity, sharpen powers of observation and overcome creative obstacles.

Spring 2001 saw the publication of Jane's first book, The Quilted Garden. Besides being 20 years of color reproductions of her work, it is also a window onto the artist's process: influences and inspirations, family life, methodologies and good old tricks of the trade!

Jane spends part of her creative time designing fabric for the prestigious quilt fabric manufacturer FreeSpirit, in NYC. Her first line, The Exotic Garden, debuted in 2002 and introduced the quilting, interior design and wearable markets to Jane's extravagant vision of flora and fauna in undeniably Sassaman colors. Inspired by the likes of Arts & Craft founder William Morris, the Finnish design company Merimekko and textile artist Kaffe Fassett, Jane has unapologetically produced exuberant large-scale design motifs drenched in exciting color.

Ask a Family Doctor–FREE Event

Join us at 7 pm as Dr. Therese Zink will explore important health issues of 2012, making healthier behavior choices, what you need to know about end of life planning, and important items in health care reform.

Dr. Zink is a family physician and professor at the University of Minnesota Department of Family Medicine. She teaches at the medical school, performs research and sees patients in Zumbrota. In the past she has cared for patients on the Navajo Reservation, in urban areas and done volunteer work in the former Soviet Union and Central America. She is currently serving on Governor Dayton's Health Reform Task Force.

Dr. Zink has published three books: The Country Doctor Revisited: A 21st Century Reader, A Doctor: Reflections by Minnesota Medical Students, and Confessions Of A Sin Eater: A Doctor's Reflections.

Forever Plaid at the State Theatre

Get your tickets for the last three performances of Forever Plaid staged at the State Theatre this weekend by Z-Theatre Community Theatre.
