Private Buckaroo (1942)
Andrew Sisters, Dick Foran, Harry James, Shemp Howard, Joe E. Lewis
A Universal Army enlistment promotion, produced as a musical showcase for Harry James, the Andrews Sisters, Joe E. Lewis, and Donald O'Connor & Peggy Ryan. The film's thin plot has James drafted, and joining him is the band's lead vocalist Lon Prentice (Dick Foran), who doesn't believe that Army training and regulations are necessary for anyone of his skill and fame. Shemp Howard steals the film whenever James and the Andrews aren't performing. As Sgt. Snavely, he's effectively teamed with Mary Wickes as his shrewish fiancée, trying desperately to keep her away from the attentions of nightclub comic and USO performer Lancelot Pringle McBiff (Joe E. Lewis). Shemp also has the opportunity to clown onstage with the Andrews Sisters during a musical finale, as they perform Don't Sit Under the Appletree. Arguably, Shemp's best solo feature film credit. 1 hour 8 Minutes

Wine tasting starts at 6:30. Movie at 7:30 pmWine, Cheese and the movie that started it all! In 1976, a small American winery bested the exalted French wines of the time and sent the wine industry into a tizzy--putting California wines on the map for good. Based on a true story, "Bottle Shock" chronicles the events leading up to the famous "Judgment of Paris" tastings, told through the lives of father and son, Jim and Bo Barrett. A former real estate attorney, Jim has sacrificed everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted chardonnay. His business, however, is struggling, and he's not only trying to overcome differences with his slacker son, but is also fighting off the creditors. Meanwhile in Paris, unwitting British wine shop owner Steven Spurrier hopes to revive his own failing business by sponsoring a competition which will pit the traditional French powerhouse against the California upstarts. Little did Steven and Jim realize that they were both on course to change the history of wine forever. This comedy is rated PG-13. This event is paired with a wine tasting event. This event is sponsored by ZAAC. 10% discount for groups of 10 or more.

Songs of Hope, the concert tour resulting from a six-week youth performing arts project in St. Paul, MN, stops in Zumbrota for the seventh year in a row, on Thurs., July 20, at 7 p.m. The free concert is at the State Theatre. Crossings and the Zumbrota Area Arts Council are sponsoring the performance.
The young vocalists sing songs from their own homelands mixed with U.S. songs chosen because together they offer perfect entertainment for a warm summer’s night. This year participating children are from countries such as Vietnam, China, India, Turkey, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Iraq, Israel, Jamaica, Guatemala, Argentina and the United States.
Before the concert, children of all ages are invited to Zumbrota’s East Park, just a few blocks from Crossings and the theater, for “Games from Around the World,” from 4:00-5:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to learn games from other countries and share favorite games. From 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., locals will be serving hamburgers and veggie burgers, salads, lemonade and desserts. The public is welcome to the free picnic, where free will donations will be accepted. The ninety-minute concert begins at 7:00pm. Concert attendees can enjoy free ice cream sandwiches.
On Friday morning, just before leaving Zumbrota for their next performance, they stop to perform a mini-concert at the Zumbrota Care Center.
The annual Songs of Hope concert tour has a well-deserved reputation for lively, upbeat shows for all ages. In its 18 years of operation, Songs of Hope has touched the lives of hundreds of children and staff from around the globe, and moved audiences to joy and to tears. Each concert is appropriate for children, families and adults who celebrate music and community.
The nonprofit Songs of Hope™ offers participants a unique opportunity to live in community with kids from other cultures while learning and performing music from many countries. Campers learn to look past prejudices, misconceptions and newspaper headlines as they live, sing and dance together. They practice six hours a day, six days a week for three weeks. Then, they take these songs of peace, love, and respect into neighboring communities in a joyous celebration of cultural unity, delighting their audiences along the way.
In 2017, the program is hosting 84 children. Everyone performs on every song, which means some performers will have learned to sing in new languages. An additional pleasure is the chance to see rich and beautiful traditional costumes, some brought by adult chaperones accompanying the children from their home countries.
These activities are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

"Poijat" observes its 28th year in 2018 with concerts in Minnesota, following extensive touring recently including to San José, California, Buffalo, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and two weeks in Finland. They have been presenting music in concerts, at ethnic festivals, in regional tours, at music conferences, recreating authentic social dance music along with concert repertoire from a bygone era. “Poijat” was formed in Northfield, Minnesota, in January 1990, by Northfielder Paul Niemistö and made its first concert tour to a Finnish ethnic festival in Florida the next spring, and then made its first trip to Finland in 1992 for the Finnish 75 anniversary/. They returned to Finland last year to help celebrate the Centennial of this Nordic nation.
During the 1980's, Paul Niemistö made contact with many Finnish brass players, thereby discovering this relatively unknown musical tradition. Members of Ameriikan poijat are musicians and teachers are from greater Minnesota, a region where many Nordic settlers arrived, Finns especially in the north. Ameriikan poijat has developed programming around beautiful old concert music and dance arrangements, and has enjoyed wide popularity among Finnish American music lovers and festival goers. Much of the music played by Ameriikan poijat is quite familiar to Finnish immigrants, being many of the same pieces heard played by accordions or dance orchestras. They have released four CDs and also have published their sheet music.

Critically acclaimed and with a star-studded “played with” list, Shawn Phillips has the goods. Audiences will thrill to his voice and guitar on Fri. Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre.
Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early-'70s singer/songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer and songwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following. His refusal to shape his music -- which crosses between folk-rock, jazz, progressive, pop, and classical -- to anyone else's expectations allowed him to hold onto a large and dedicated cult following, without ever achieving the stardom that his talent seemed to merit.
His most recently released album is “Continuance” (2017) and he’s working on a new studio [read more…]

The Whitesidewalls Rock ‘n’ Roll Revue was founded in 1972 in Forest Lake, Minnesota. College classmates Pat Brown and Eric Satterlund discovered a mutual love for 50s and 60s music and decided to form such a group. The Whitesidewalls grew quickly in popularity and became a fixture of the Twin Cities music scene, appearing at ballrooms, bars, corporate and community events and celebrations throughout the 5-state area. They presented the Rock ‘n’ Roll Revue for many summers at the Valleyfair amusement park in Shakopee Minnesota, and were a part of the first Winter Dance Party revival (the annual event commemorating the last shows of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper at the Surf Ballroom) in Clear Lake Iowa in 1979, and have returned to perform many times at the February event. The Whitesidewalls have operated continuously since 1972 and carry on today, bringing the best of rock and roll, rockabilly and doo-wop from 1954 to 1964 (the “golden age of rock and roll”) to many thousands of friends, fans and dancers each year.[read more…]

Layne Yost pays faithful tribute to the timeless, still-popular music of John Denver on Sat., Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Crossings brings, “Tribute to the Music of John Denver,” to the State Theatre.

Denver is best known for songs like, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Annie’s Song,” “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” along with other hits. A common theme in his lyrics was his enjoyment of the natural world. He was one of the most popular and best-selling acoustic artists of the 1970s, and his songs were hits on several charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, country and western, and adult contemporary. He earned four platinum albums and 12 gold albums during his career.[read more…]

Get ready for a night full of great songs from artists that Nashville artist Jeff Dayton has worked with over the years, legends such as Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. It’s a show full of uptempo fun and memories, strong guitar playing and skilled backing musicians. Presented by Crossings at the State Theatre on Fri., May 17, at 7:30pm.
From the White House to the Grand Ole Opry, Jeff Dayton has been playing guitar and performing all his life. He’s a Nashville producer and writer and loves the concentrated creative scene in Music City. His hometown roots in Minnesota and years in Arizona earned him the job of bandleader with Hall of Fame artist Glen Campbell for fifteen years. He also found time to land his music degree, regional hit records and the honor of backing artists including Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Buck Owens, Tracy Byrd, Bo Diddley, Dizzy Gillespie, Gene Autry, Mac Davis and many more. Once arriving in Nashville, Jeff focused on writing and producing, but because of his reputation and guitar skills, was soon touring with megastar Kenny Chesney, Lee Greenwood, Sarah Darling, Tammy Cochran and others.[read more…]

Terry Lee Goffee has been a Johnny Cash fan since he was 8 years old. His long-running admiration for the music and the man is apparent in his performance as Cash in “The Ultimate Tribute to Johnny Cash,” brought by Crossings to the Zumbrota State Theatre on Fri, June 28, at 8 p.m.
Goffee does more than play the music or “impersonate” Cash: like an actor in a play, he becomes his character from the moment he walks on stage until the end of the show. He plays the music so well audiences and reviewers rave. He plays the man so well, he was chosen to provide the moves for a Cash character on the Guitar Hero 5 video game.
He looks like Cash. He sounds like Cash. He moves like Cash--Nobody does Johnny Cash like Terry Lee Goffee.
Audiences will revel in 34 Cash songs, including classic such as “A Boy Named Sue,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” “I Walk The Line,” “Ring Of Fire, “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Hurt.”[read more…]

It's been 50 years since Woodstock attracted 400,000 people to a farm in upstate New York to listen to music by such artists as Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, the Band, Sly and the Family Stone and the first live performance of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Over the course of three days, the world changed as the peace-loving, hippy culture took root in the American consciousness. Sure careers were launched in those three days and the event was historic and unprecedented in scope. But more importantly, the possibility that people could come together and live peacefully, caring for one another and helping each other, created a feeling of optimism as the 1970's began. On October 4th, musicians from a large number of different bands all around Minnesota will join together and play the most iconic songs from that weekend. Who knows? Maybe we'll spark a renewed sense of optimism that peace can be had yet in our lifetime.

Layne Yost pays faithful tribute to the timeless, still-popular music of John Denver with a “Tribute to the Music of John Denver."
Jon Shimoda plays bass to accompany Yost’s pure vocals and guitar playing in this homage to the music and the man. They capture the simple soul of Denver's music. Woven within the music are stories that give insight intoDenver's life and legacy.
Denver is best known for songs like, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Annie’s Song,” “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” along with other hits.

Collective Unconscious presents Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in its entirety for the 50th Anniversary of this groundbreaking album. We drop the needle on S&G's last record as a duo. Complete with Strings and Horns, it's a true sonic representation of the original arrangements, down to the last meticulous detail.
Bridge Over Troubled Water generates a unique set of feelings in us. The lyrics are so visual that taking the album down and placing it on the record player (the only real way to listen to BOTW) is like paging through a childhood photo album long lost. The record is simultaneously somber and joyous, deep and light. It’s only now, looking back across some 50 years that we get a sense of the placeholder in time that was BOTW. Released as it was in 1970, BOTW truly served as a marker between the decades, a nod to the ideals and folksy simplicity of the sixties mixed with the global complexities and inward thinking that was to dominate the decade to come. BOTW was a balm in a confusing time and remains so today.

“John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer-songwriter of the 80’s folk scene. Hailing from New Jersey, but forged in the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene, he honed his craft and persona into an unmistakable image. The shy, wry, insightful, and yes, sensitive singer-songwriter has been copied and parodied. But the old coat he wove still fits, and still suits him well. The old songs ring as true as they ever did, and the new ones are just as good.” John Gorka website

"The music of John Denver is timeless and well known. The "Tribute to the Music of John Denver" by the Layne Yost Group is a faithful performance of songs and stories that capture and pay homage to the music and the man. A wonderful show that will take you back and remind you of simple things that remain true."
Jon Shimoda on bass and Carol McDowall on fiddle accompany Yost’s pure vocals and guitar playing in this homage to the music and the man. They capture the simple soul of Denver's music. Woven within the music are stories that give insight into Denver's life and legacy.

He looks like Cash. He sounds like Cash. He moves like Cash. Nobody does Johnny Cash like Terry Lee Goffee!
Terry Lee Goffee "World's Premier" Johnny Cash Tribute
Goffee does more than play the music or “impersonate” Cash: like an actor in a play, he becomes his character from the moment he walks on stage until the end of the show. He plays the music so well that audiences and reviewers rave. He plays the man so well, that he was chosen to provide the moves for a Cash character on the Guitar Hero 5 video game.
Cash – The Man in Black – is widely considered one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. His music is primarily thought of as country, but his deep bass-baritone voice lent itself equally well to the genres of rock and roll, blues, folk, rockabilly, and gospel.[read more…]

Claudia Schmidt has been perfecting her craft of performing for almost four decades. It is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge (her word!) of music, poetry, story, laughter. drama, and celebrating the moment. Work in clubs, theaters, festivals, TV, radio has added depth and dimension, and since she has always included her original work along with very personal versions of the work of others, what you get is a unique look at the world from someone who says what she sees with clarity, humor, and wonder. The San Francisco Bay Guardian said: Schmidt's shows are a lot like falling in love. You never know what's going to happen next, chances are it's going to be wonderful, every moment is burned into your memory and you know you'll never be the same again." More succinctly, Garrison Keillor said "when Claudia sings a song, it stays sung"

California Dreamin’ – The Songs of Laurel Canyon
Laurel Canyon is a neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills region of the Santa Monica Mountains. The creative flowering that grew out of this section of Los Angeles in the 1960s and early 1970s produced some of the greatest music of that era, changing the culture and the lives of some of rock and roll’s most gifted artists. Imagine living down the road from Joni Mitchel or just upstairs from Jackson Browne. Imagine if all you had to do on a weekend night was walk down the street and you were at someone’s house and they had a guitar and a piano … and their name was Neil Young, or Graham Nash, or Glen Frey. Imagine if your neighbors were musicians who were starting bands called The Doors, The Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Monkees, The Eagles, and The Mamas and Papas.
Veteran singers Mary Jane Alm, Boyd Lee, Aimée Lee, Paul Frantzich and Tim Frantzich, along with a stellar lineup of musicians will walk you through the streets of this magical place and time. You will hear the stories of some of your favorite musicians. Your memory will be flooded with songs from The Association, The Turtles, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Buffalo Springfield, Brian Wilson, The Jefferson Airplane, and more … all who resided in this beautiful bubble of creativity, friendship, sunshine, and music.
This show brings together what happened in this magical place when it was just the right time, just the right space, with just the right musicians … in a very special moment in time that created the songs of Laurel Canyon.

However, Olive and Florence have VERY different personalities. Where Olive is messy, untidy, and unconcerned about the state of her apartment, Florence is obsessively clean, tidy, and obsessed with hygiene. Olive’s easy-going outlook on life soon clashes with Florence’s highly-strung neurotic tendencies, testing their friendship to the limit. When Olive organizes a double date with the Costazuela brothers, their differences come to a head, and sparks fly.[read more…]

Neil Simon’s revision of his hugely successful play, The Odd Couple, sees the lead characters transformed into Olive Madison and Florence Unger. Olive and their group of girlfriends are enjoying their weekly Trivial Pursuit night in Olive’s messy and ill-equipped apartment. As the game continues, Florence arrives, fresh from being dumped by her husband. Fearful that the neurotic Florence might attempt suicide, Olive invites her to move in as her roommate.

Jimmi and the Band of Souls is an award-winning blues band with members from both Minneapolis and Rochester. One of their guitarists, Tom Kochie, was just voted into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame.
Their performances are high energy and full of soul and passion. They play boogie-woogie. They play slow and lonely. They play toe tappin’, deep groovin’, and hard drivin’. You won't want to sit still when they start to play.
The six-piece band brings a host of diversity too: Electric guitar, slide guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, saxophone, bass, drums, and congas. It’s a full sound that changes in tone and timbre with every song. They are meant to be seen and, once you have, they won't be forgotten.

Denver is best known for songs like, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Annie’s Song,” “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” along with other hits. A common theme in his lyrics was his enjoyment of the natural world. From the filmmaking duo who created Visions of Home (featuring Heather Neill) and A Painter Who Farms (featuring Allen Whiting), comes The Power of Stone, a documentary film featuring island artist Lew French premiering at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society’s 9th annual Documentary Week Festival.
About the film: The Power of Stone offers a glimpse into the life of the renowned stone artist, Lew French, during the time he was working to create the Rose Styron Garden for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. At first, Lew French appears as unyielding as the granite he works with, but beneath this artist’s rigid exterior is a deeply spiritual soul. Though he wakes up at 4 am to meditate every day, Lew struggles to quiet his mind. In stone, Lew finds that which he longs for: stillness. As one friend put it, “Don’t be tricked by the idea that he’s a stone mason. He’s sort of a philosopher, artist, spiritual guide who’s working with stone.”[read more…]

Imagine if your neighbors were musicians who were starting bands called The Doors, The Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Monkees, The Eagles, and The Mamas and Papas.[read more…]

In 1971 John initiated the now landmark Will the Circle be Unbroken* album, hooking Nitty Gritty Dirt Band up with his musical mentors Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson simply by asking them in Colorado (brother Bill then asked Merle Travis, and it started growing) to record; it grew to inviting Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, ‘Bashful’ Brother Oswald, Merle Travis, Vassar Clements, and Junior Huskey, for 5 magic hot August days of recording. The now multi-platinum “Circle” is in both the Library of Congress and the Grammy Hall of Fame. * “One of the most important records to come out of Nashville…” Chet Flippo (Rolling Stone).
He closed ep. 6 (called Will the Circle be Unbroken) of PBS’s Ken Burns Country Music, appearing in 3 other episodes.[read more…] -
